Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
The CBT’s are firmly grounded in research findings and include helping individuals change the way they think, feel or behave. CBT is generally a short term collaborative process which teaches skills and requires between session assignments. Over 30 years of controlled research have attested to their efficacy in treating a broad range of human conditions.  Examples of specific methods used include desensitization, cognitive restructuring, assertiveness training, relaxation methods.

Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy works directly on maladaptive behaviors.  These behavior changes can then be the catalyst for equally meaningful changes in feelings and attitude.  Specific methods include exposure and response prevention for OCD and habit reversal training for hair pulling among other habit disorders.  Below is a description of our OCD program.

We begin by educating the patient about the particular dynamics of OCD. Learning about the illness makes it more predictable and less overwhelming.  The participation of family members is actively encouraged. Treatment includes techniques to help significant others remain supportive without unwittingly reinforcing the disorder. Appropriate candidates for treatment possess a high degree of motivation and must be willing to actively participate in their own treatment.

Finally, it is important to remember that thousands have successfully used these methods and that with time and patience most sufferers can manage their own OCD.

Behavior therapy involves learning active and concrete strategies for managing fear and controlling compulsive behaviors. Components of treatment include:
  • Recognizing triggers of OCD
  • Training in anxiety management
  • Methods for decreasing rituals
  • Assisted exposure to feared objects or activity
  • Procedures for managing intrusive thoughts

Additional outpatient programs include:

  • intensive exposure therapy programs
  • group therapy
  • family and spouse participation

Executive Coaching

Many individuals benefit from frequent brief therapy contacts either in person or on the phone. Coaching focuses on helping individuals identify personal and professional goals and complete goal related tasks in a timely fashion.  Skills that are taught include judicious use of “to do” lists, strategies for improving punctuality, overcoming procrastination, organizing oneself and problem solving skills.  Additional goals can include decluttering home and office (see professional organizing) and assistance in the areas of being assertive if for instance, phone calls are delayed or avoided because of concerns about communicating effectively. The use of daily email can also help increase accountability and productivity.

Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapies
Rhythm Stabilization therapies have been used to help people with Bipolar mood disorders regularize their schedules and in so doing stabilize their
moods. Specific strategies include sleep scheduling and regularizing contact with other people among other things.

EMDR
This package of CBT components has been found to be particularly helpful with post traumatic stress disorder and seems to facilitate the rapid processing of painful experiences and memories.

ADD Therapies
Individuals with ADD can often benefit from brief daily phone contact. Specific daily assignments are given to assist in task completion.

Biofeedback and Related Arousal Reduction Methods

Biofeedback is a treatment modality for individuals interested in learning to control their bodies.  These methods provide objective information about various stress influenced biological functions (e.g. muscle tension, sweat gland activity) and can be very helpful in an overall treatment approach to various stress related maladies such as headaches, irritable bowel and hypertension.  We use computerized equipment that provides us with quantitative information about your baseline physiological status and progress.  Specific methods are then used to help you apply these methods to the naturalistic environment.

Alternative Medicine and Mindfulness Meditation
The mind body services we provide such as hypnosis, mindfulness meditation and biofeedback reflect our philosophy of treating individuals as opposed to just disorders. A holistic lifestyle approach is often necessary to restore balance in one’s life. We collaborate extensively with our network of alternative providers such as osteopaths, acupuncturists, nutritionists, homeopaths and massage therapists when appropriate.

Assertiveness

Being able to communicate your feelings in direct, honest ways sets the stage for healthier relationships and greater self esteem. The process of learning to be more assertive begins by reviewing one’s personal rights, which include the right to express your opinion, the right to make a request, the right to make a refusal etc. Next we help you identify the specific situations and individuals which you find difficult to handle.  In addition, we focus on distinguishing assertiveness from aggression and unassertiveness. The goal is to help people more strategically express their feelings so as to increase the likelihood that people are receptive.  At it’s core, assertiveness is honest communication that engenders self and other respect.  A particular emphasis is placed on non verbal languages including eye contact, tone of voice, etc. as well as the use of softer language. Advanced assertive techniques are also taught such as dealing with particularly difficult people.  Role playing and imaginable rehearsal methods are used to facilitate learning.

Our practice offers a number of adjunctive services which include stress management training, dietary interventions, exercise compliance enhancement and smoking cessation assistance.  We are committed to helping people both with preexisting illness and those “at risk” develop a healthier lifestyle.
